How a Plant Saved My Sanity

new born avoado

These have been two difficult years.
Even if I step out of my own small personal experience, the whole world is going through a profound transformation.
I’m an optimist by nature, I believe that light comes in through the cracks.
And yet, somehow it feels like the inner cracks this time remain dark.

A few days ago, I was taking out the trash to the bin under my building, and just before I closed the lid, I noticed something odd in the bag — a young, strong leaf.
Where did it come from?

I looked inside and saw an avocado pit sprouting.
When did it have time? I had thrown it out just the night before.
I carefully took it out, and at home I discovered roots too — it looked like they had started growing even before I opened the fruit.

These little things I don’t pay attention to — like the roots in a pit I threw away absentmindedly — that’s life itself.
The root of new leaves. Of growth. A symbol of my ability to pull my thoughts out of the trash.

That’s the true test of the human spirit:
Can you still grow new leaves — even when everything around you seems to be rotting?
